In Win XP, I always get a 'New Hardware' prompt for my HP 5550 printer when I start the PC, even though the driver is installed and the printer works great. What can I do to stop those messages?

uninstall the driver which is already installed. And then without connecting the printer first run the driver setup. When it ask to connect the printer then connect and its done.

I would suggest that you click Next, follow the boxes through, and see what Windows XP wants you to install... Perhaps if you just let Windows do its installation of whatever device it wants to install, then it'll shut up after it's done it... Windows is strange like this sometimes. :)
