How can a human be certain that a thought or idea is not a cognitive distortion?

    We can't. This is the point of Rene Descartes famous phrase "I think therefore I am". He decided to try and find out what was 100% true in the world. He could only prove he was thinking, and could not even prove he was thinking what he thought he was thinking!

    You can't. For all we know, reality is all one huge distortion and we are all having it simultaneously. However, it is very persistent.
