No.
You will only lose all the content on your iPod if you elect to restore your device to it's factory settings.
Even then, iTunes will warn you that by doing so, you will be losing all of the current content on your iPod and completely wiping it.
Updating or reinstalling iTunes won't affect your iPod, as long as you make sure not to accidently restore it (your iPod) to factory settings.
Once the new version of iTunes is installed and you have connected your iPod to your computer using the USB device, your computer will pick it up and either automatically open iTunes, or ask you which program you want to use to run the device with.
I always make sure I have iTunes open before I connect my iPod - that way, it automatically appears in iTunes once it has been recognized by my laptop.

Thanks PP, v. helpful answer (well the helpfulness is compounded by the fact it's what I wanted to hear!) :) My iTunes is done for, just won't work through the desktop icon at all. I'll have to uninstall & reinstall it all completely when I'm feeling energetic!

No worries, my dear :) I've had to uninstall and reinstall iTunes a few times before, after experiencing the same and similar problems. Once you have reinstalled iTunes, just open it up, then connect your iPod. It'll come up straight away in iTunes and all your songs will be intact.

If you're ever worried about losing all of your songs and data on your iPod, there is a program called EphPod that you can download. Basically, it transfers and backs up everything on your iPod to your HD, so in the unfortunate event that you do accidentally wipe your iPod, all of your songs and data are saved on your HD. That way you can simply drag and drop all your songs back onto your device, rather than having to re-download and load everything :)

Oooh, I might download that. Silly me doesn't back up aaaanything. *goes to look* You're a mine (mind? - I've never been sure what the ''m'' word was in that saying!) of information :)
by Carmella on September 25th, 2007
I never used to, either, until the day I lost over 20,000 songs by accidentally restoring my iPod to factory settings. It had taken me well over three years to accumulate my collection of every song and album I have ever loved - two years later and I'm still trying to replicate it. So I definitely learned the hard way :) Don't make the same mistake I did!

Oh. My. God. How did you not have a nervous breakdown?! I'm scared of losing 800!
by Carmella on September 25th, 2007
I DID have a nervous breakdown! I had albums and songs on there that were really rare recordings, that originally took me months and months to track down. I even had a coveted, extremely rare song by the band Pictures of Annie (who's band only existed for about a week, lol). Hey, I still owe you that recommendations list. Alright, let me start by asking if you have ever heard of / like the band Silverchair?
by PrettyPirate on September 25th, 2007
Um, I've heard of them now! But no, I haven't. Are they Australian? I literally don't know *any* Australian musicians, except those two whose names I shall speak not. :(
by Carmella on September 25th, 2007
Yes, they're Australian. My one and only claim to fame is that I used to date the bass guitarist, Chris, lmao. But really, that aside, they're amazing. They've won more ARIA's than any other Australian band, and quite frankly, their music is brilliant. Right, that's it, I'm going to upload some of their songs to my MediaFire account. Once they're up, I'll link you and you can download them. Their music and their sound has really changed and progressed over the years, which is understandable, considering they started making music when they were 15. They're all my age now (mid-20's) and have a much more refined sound. Really, I just love them. Okay, so that's Silverchair sorted. What about Wolfmother? Or Betchadupa? I just want to make sure, so I don't double up on stuff you already have :)
by PrettyPirate on September 25th, 2007
Are you kidding?! I have not heard of any of these. Seriously, my iTunes collection is lacking, as you know from it's sheer sizelessness. ''Betchadupa'' beats Death Cab for Cutie on the inventive names score I reckon! I can always use Limewire though, so don't worry about uploading if you have other stuff to do. Thank you :) That's a pretty decent claim to fame btw...mine is I know someone who went out with the bass guitarist of an Australian band, lol!
by Carmella on September 25th, 2007
The first ever Killers concert I went to, Betchadupa were the supporting act. And honestly, wow ... they were almost better than The Killers, they rocked that hard. Their music is similar to garage / punk / indie rock, but it isn't manically hard and they also do really lovely melodies. Actually, rather a lot of what I would like to send you is mostly indie ... so some of it may be different to what you're used to hearing (I'm assuming, considering I don't know what you're used to hearing, really, lmao). And no, I don't mind at all! I love doing this, honestly. Sharing music and recommending music to people. But, I will admit, I'm pretty picky with who I share my favourite bands with - I tend to jealously guard them, especially if they're fairly unknown. But I can tell you're a musical connoisseur, so you're good ;)
by PrettyPirate on September 25th, 2007
:) I am insanely jealous of your Killers concert tickets. Grrrr! On that note, I should probably try and sleep. Which won't happen, of course!
by Carmella on September 25th, 2007
Yes, you should try. Nightnight :)
