There was an original agenda to take into account when trying to deal with questions of this nature... God had promised to 'fix' the adam / sin problem and this involved having a 'pure' body for the messiah when he came... Bits of energy (positive or negative) sticks to stuff everywhere... we cant see it but it is there... Like a tracker dog following the energy trail of the person it is tracking. The wrong kind of energy in the final body would have disastrous and render the whole plan null and void. I dont susbcribe to the 'look how bad god is lets bash him' brigade - I just know that I would protect the child in my wifes womb very fiercly if anyone tried to interfere with my plan of a healthy baby... But to get back to the question - they were fortunate... They should have been wiped out with the rest of them but they were not... some would call that mercy - I think that they must have been stunningly beautiful... :-)

Because the men who wrote the bible at the time and decided what books would be in it and what books would not wanted to show woman that if they are virginal they can be saved. In fact their were big movements at times for woman to stay virgins and even re-virginize. There were even apostles involved in a virgin campaign and that was the eventual cause of their deaths because some higher ranking politicians of the time were angry that their wives stopped sleeping with them. They were told sex without purpose was sinful. Read some of the books from the time period that the Romans decided to leave out of the bible. It will be very helpful. ; )

The sexually active women were ordered to death because they had tempted the men into sinful acts. The virgins had not tempted the men therefore were not punished.

The little girls were kept alive to be used by the soldiers "for their own purposes". So how long they STAYED virgins is anyone's guess. That's the reason they were spared though. It is a savage, nasty passage that people try to explain away because they feel uncomfortable with it. The problem is, it is written pretty clearly...

For raping, essentially. Historically speaking (and even in many places in the modern age - look at Darfur), women's bodies have been seen as the legitimate "spoils of war".
