Dating is when you get to know each other better, and it could be that he discovered she was not the one he wanted to wake up to each morning. Over the years, they could have drifted apart, or taken different paths in life.

Laziness, convenience, a 'stuck in a rut' comfort zone where it feels ok to amble along in a pleasant enough 'going nowhere' kind of a relationship so long as he never wakes up and thinks of it becoming permanent. Its not just men, women have been known to do this too, not realising the cost this takes out of their partner. They settle into a pleasant routine with someone like settling into a deep, soft sofa, where it becomes such an effort to get back out again that they never really make that effort until its 'move or be trapped'. That's the point where they realise, with some panic, that they had bigger plans and other things to do. It short-sighted, selfish, and it sucks, huh.
