  • Distemper is probably the oldest of canine viral infections and there are years and years of veterinary experience with it. Chances are he or she will be fine.
  • It's a very serious disease, especially for young dogs. We had a lab man years ago and the vet said it didn't look good but we pulled him through. There is no cure for it. The only thing you can do, and your vet can do is give medicine to prevent secondary infections like control vomiting, diarrhea, or neurologic symptoms, and combat dehydration through administration of fluids. Good nursing may save him. He should be kept warm, receive good nursing care, and be separated from other dogs. I'm so sorry you are going through this. I was only 15 when I went through this and it was hard. It takes about 2 weeks for the incubation period on distemper. I would go back to the store and get some sort of restitution or something because they sold you a sick dog. That is the problem with buying dogs from stores instead of finding one from a reputable breeder. Most of the time you can pay less money and get better guaranties with a dog. All young dogs should be kept completely away from other dogs until they have been vaccinated. Stores don't seem to be able to facilitate proper health and safety requirements for young puppies.
  • Distemper is a nasty one, Parvo about on par. At this point I would say it's probably a 50/50 chance. In addition to the problems Galeanda accurately outlined for you, there is also the possibility that the pup could develop some on-going problems from the neurological effects of the disease. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you include a very quiet environment for the pup to be resting in...NO excitement, NO loud noises, NO startling. These things can TRIGGER a "fit" if the dog starts having a lot of "fits" there is almost always continued and life long damage from a Neurological point. I would assuredly take issue with the Pet Store...be aware, however, if you want your money back, then THEY are entitled to take the pup back as well. MAKE SURE that you read over your purchase contract and also have someone else read it...as well...you might or might not be entitled to receive partial compensation towards the Vet Bills and still keep the puppy. If you have not contacted them..DO SO..IN PERSON, not by phone. You need to have the store owner or manager before you NOT just an employee of the store...Take someone calm and trustworthy WITH YOU when you go, and go into the store WHEN THERE ARE OTHER POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS IN THERE AS WELL...YOU WANT AN AUDIENCE! If you have access to a small tape recorder THAT IT too and tape the conversation. Do NOT make threats, do not yell, but in a clear and audible voice, in front of potential customers, EXPLAIN what has happened and ask the Owner or Manager WHAT THEY ARE GOING TO DO ABOUT IT. This is very COMMON WITH PET STORE PUPPIES...because as mentioned...the majority do come from Puppy Mills. Illness such as Distemper, Parvo, Physical problems with hips, hearts, skin and emotional problems (I have seen crazy puppies...and not crazy in any good way...I mean INSANE..UNABLE TO FUNCTION OR RELATE TO OTHERS... HUMAN OR ANIMAL) IN PET STORES. It is a tragic situation and I am very sorry you are learning about it in this manner. You and the pup are in my prayers. Galeanda gave you good information and advice...add it to your Vet's and follow it to the letter...perhaps the pup will survive and thrive.
  • Hopefully you have caught it in time & it can be treated back to health. I hope it will be ok I've heard of dogs making it through when they caught it early so I'll be crossing my fingers for you. Good luck
  • this just happened to us recently. Our yorkie pup started vomiting, had constant diarrhea out of nowhere. Fearing that it was parvo, we took him to the vet and they had told us it could have been numerous things (like all vets would say); they ran tests (in which case it wasnt parvo)and wanted to us to run numerous tests. Vet bill was already almost 400.. if we proceeded with more tests it would have been nearly $800 which is something we couldnt afford. So they sent us home some medicine (sucralfate- which soothes the throat and stomach),some worming medicine incase it were to be a parasite, as well as a change in his diet and got pedilite (for more electrolytes) & karo syrup (rub on gums to increase blood sugar) after a week of this, our lil yorkie is just fine and running around EVERYWHERE. Because it was almost the same exact situation, i recommend doing the check up and if it isnt anything serious like parvo, most likely tending to him in these ways is ur best bet cuz like i said our puppy is better then ever. new environments and food might have caused that dilemma. So good luck.. hope this helped a lil.
