  • Ugh, not this one again. Your perception is only your perception, as you have provided no proof of your statement. Generally we've agreed that Protestant Christians are the most provocative of atheists, and like attracts like. Ergo, the most provocative athiests.. you get the drill.
  • I don't think that is the case. However, I could ask the same question, reversed. It's all dependent upon individual experiences. You can't lump all people together and pitch them against each other and call it fact. It's purely your perception that this happens, and no one can explain or articulate your opinions and perceptions but you.
  • ClusterwhAh?!
  • They do? Well maybe because Christianity is the most popluar religion above all else, & they just want to mess w/ the big dogs.
  • I don't think that statement is true. I know atheists who target no one.
  • I'm a Christian & I have to respectfully disagree with you. Atheists don't preach & try & turn us into non believers but I can't say that about some Christians
  • Maybe its because .. Christians don't like atheists .. thats why they are targets ??
  • It may be the case on AB but the reason for that is that most people on this site come from the western world, North America, Eurpope and Australia (inc. Australia for arguement sake). Most religious people in these countries are christians. Therefor this is the religion attacked most often on AB. . Also, religious people attack atheists and agnostics just as often as the other way around.
  • My family raised me in a Baptist church. When I became old enough to decide for myself, I stopped attending church. I didn't become an atheist, I just had no interest in attending church anymore. I didn't think negatively towards Christians until a "born again" Christian told me I was going to hell because I didn't read the Bible. I remember thinking if going to hell meant being away from hateful people like HIM, I would prefer THAT to heaven. It was much later through study of various religious practices that I discovered there appears a universal thread between them all. The difference between practices are insignificant compared to much they have in common. It is THIS I accept over religious dogma. I'm not an atheist, but my ongoing displeasure with SOME Christians stems from that one person telling me I was going to hell. It's this self-righteous attitude of "my way or the highway" that drive people who might BENEFIT from Christianity, away from it.
  • Well, Christians actively proselytize in order to convert. In the US they are politically active in trying to infuse their religion into government (ie on other people). So, if Christians are going to do that, Christians need to be ready for the debate that they've invited. On a more specific note, I've noticed you asking a lot of questions targeting Atheists recently.
  • There was a very similar question here before, and I gave my answer there: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/115692 I would only add to that, that an atheist in India would probably have more to say about Hinduism, and an atheist in Saudi Arabia would spend a lot of time defending his position against Muslim believers. Wherever you are living, there is probably a preponderance of Christian worship, in which case the option that atheists are most obviously rejecting is Christianity. In the english-speaking world, which the people on this website tend to come from, Christianity would be the majority religion - and just like on this website, it is Christianity which most often objects to the ideas that an atheist lives by, as a representative of the majority religious culture. I don't really see wiccans or buddhists, of whom we have representatives here, asking pointed questions in the atheist section. Like "are atheists evil?", or like that troll who was making a mess of this section a few weeks ago. Extrapolate that outwards and you get the idea. Sticking to the english-speaking world, since Christianity has been so infused into rightist politics in recent times, atheists like myself need to defend against legislations which attempt to impose that particular religion on us. This may give the impression that atheists have a particular beef with Christianity, but it's not so. I would object to such an attempt by any religion were they to try it. If, say, Hindus passed laws in this country restricting my health care based on religious concepts, they would sure get an earful from me. Political angle aside, an atheist is declining to join any of the religions of the world, not just yours in particular. That's why we're atheists and not just non-christian.
  • I think it is somewhat about going after the power and influence. As a Catholic, the Catholic church is targeted by many since they are the "big dog" as far as influence, etc. why would an organization or individual waste time targeting "wiccans" or a smaller group with little influence on society. Christianity is definitely the big dog in the US, and gets most of the heat from dissenting groups.
  • I don't have a religion, I'm agnostic, but from a Christian background. The answer is obvious - most of the people that use this site are from those countries where Christianity is the predominant religion and so, when people like me slip out of religion the only one they have to compare against their new lifestyle is Christianity.
  • They don't. Yours is a problem with perception- how you see the world. You see Atheist vs Christian conflict because YOU are a Christian who is targeting Atheists. You live in a Christian-dominated country, so most religious discussions will revolve around Christianity. This is an English-language website, and Christianity is the dominant language among English-speakers; thus, you see lots of discussions about Christianity here. This is pure common sense.
  • I am an Athesit and I do not "target" christians or catholics. It depends on the individual and how far they are willing to go to "preach" their beliefs. I just respect others' beliefs.
  • They seem rather fascist at times, maybe? no? ok. i think a lot of them are anyway
  • Perhaps it has something to do with that whole "Christianity targeting all other people for conversion" thing, or maybe that "1'700 years of totalitarian rule over Europe and conquered countries", or the fact that it is the largest religion in the world, and thus the largest target for an Atheist to target should they wish to convert other people to atheists, or try to make people use their reasoning skills rather than blind faith, etc... Christianity is undoubtedly the most important religion in western culture, and you are most likely referring to atheists living within a western culture.
  • Because christins target atheists first, its mere retaliation
  • This question is sooo last year, but since I came across it I thought that I'd add one little tidbit that everyone left out. The Christian-Muslim-Jewish bible not only being the biggest religion going in the western hemisphere, advocates the persecution and wickedness of non-believers as well promotes the conversion of them also. Or simply putting to death the non-believers. More so than any other religious belief system in the world. All though I don't believe that atheist "target" christianity as nearly as much as they rightfully should, but if you think they do...so be it!
  • Not all atheists don't "target" people. Atheists are just people don't classify themselves as followers of specific religions. --EDIT:-- I've read your comments from other answers. To be honest, some were quite offensive and rude towards atheists. I could ask you, "Why do Christians target atheists?" Yes, I do admit some athiests do attack Christians. But some Christians attack athiests too. The biggest religious group in the Western world are Christians. I guess this also makes Christianity most targeted. And another reason - you did ask "why?" so I'm giving you a reason - is because some Christians try to force their religion on others...when I lived in Brisbane, people knew that our household were Shinto-Buddhist and not Christian, so every Saturday and Sunday morning they would knock on our door to try to convince us to join Christianity. I actually found it extremely disrespectful for them to not accept that we follow our traditional Chinese-Japanese beliefs. Of course, that's only how SOME Christians act. I hope, -O-uknow, that you're not like that kind of Christian.
  • Maybe it's because there are so many christian people who try to shove their beliefs down our throats? I'm not saying all christians are like this, because they certainly aren't. I have many christian friends and we repect wach others views and co-exist in peace. It just seems to me that more christians attack athiests than anyone else... Like you seem to be doing now. Pretty much all other religions let us be most of the time, it only seems to be christians who constantly tell us we are fools and have no morals. I strongly suggest that you find something better to do with your time. I respect your beliefs, so please don't attack me with ridiculous accusations such as this. People like you are the reason athiests attack christians.
  • why do xtians target atheists seemingly above all other belief systems? because most atheists have the nads to challenge their beliefs.
  • we don't just attack Christians we attack ALL organised religions that see fit to attack us first and it seems that Christians do a lot of this attacking first so we defend our selves ...maybe ..just maybe if they shut up and minded their own business instead of sticking their noses into so many other peoples lives then they wouldn't find them selves under attack from so many others
  • The answer is: Everything about evolution is the exact opposite of creation. God's word says: Evolution says: 1) Earth before sun. 1) Sun before earth. 2) Oceans before land. 2) Land before oceans. 3) Light before sun. 3) Sun before light. 4) Land plants first. 4) Marine life first. 5) Fish before insects. 5) Insects before fish. 6) Plants before sun. 6) Sun before plants. etc... This keeps evolution and creation at a constant war. Because unless one side conceeds, or is forced to shut up. It will just go on for ever. This is why evolutionists are always trying to get anything removed that refers to God or creation from any public view. It's the "only" way they can win. Because if their evidence was as good as they claim, no one would still believe in God and there would be no conflict.
  • Probably because Christianity is the most dominant religion and is the one that has the most effect on our day to day lives.
  • Christianity is the most pervasive religion in my country. If/when Islam becomes pervasive I'll turn my attention on it. Same for any religion that has followers who try to get their religion into laws and schools.
  • Christianity has a habit of targeting dissent. And the whole harassing thing, not cool. In my case, it's the only religion I've been exposed too. I only know one Jew and I'm not sure if he's even religious. Nevertheless I've never heard of a dooor-to-door Jew.
  • Fact: Atheists target Christians in AB more that any other religion. Fact: most atheists, here in AB, were Christians in their past. No sugar coating! My 2 cents.
  • for me been atheist means all religions are lies . i condemn all organized religions for spreading lies. so all equal in the lies , the lies must stop .
  • Atheists don't "target" anybody. But you're right, in the US (I can't say for anywhere else) if you took a poll of atheists and asked them "What religion really gets under your skin?" most of them would probably say Christianity. It's because Christianity is the major religion over here, so when a religious person bugs you it's more likely than not that person is a Christian. If the major religion here were, say, Zoroastrianism, then all the atheists would be whining about how we're sick of hearing about Ahura Mazda. It's not like we see Christianity as any more unbelievable than any other religion, is what I'm saying. It's just that Christianity is the most vocal and, as such, is the most annoying.
  • I'd say you're just geocentric. It's my bet that you're American. Most religious people in the US are Christians. And certainly most religious people trying to get laws passed that reflect their beliefs and teach they mythology in schools are Christians. . So, just for the record - I don't believe in any gods - Muslim, Hindu, Zoroastrian, or Christian. +5
  • You remember in grade school, that nerdy little kid who would cry like an infant if you looked at him the wrong way? And do you remember the big bully who enjoyed picking on the nerdy lil cry baby....? Well Christians are like the lil cry baby, and, well everyone enjoys picking on him....
