It certainly sounds like there is a fault somewhere in the television, but before you dump it and run out and buy another, you should get a rough estimate of how much it would cost to repair it at an authorized Sony service centre. If the television is ten years old or more, you should probably look at replacing it, as newer models certainly can provide better image quality. If it is five years old or less, you should seriously look at having it fixed. A typical repair would probably run somewhere around $150 for parts, labour, and sales tax, unless a very expensive component has failed.

Sounds like the picture tubes are on their way out. Those TV's are so heavy, when mine goes out... I'm getting rid of it.
