I believe it is only small tribes from the forest and not the general population. You could add many other countries to the list too.

Yes. There's a disease called Kuru which I believe is caused by eating the brains of the dead to gain their knowledge. This causes a flood of catecholamines (dopamine and serotonin especially) to enter the body, causing severe psychosis and ultimately death.

I've been to many countries, including PNG, and I'm tired of people asking if I've encountered cannibals or if I know anyone that has been eaten by one. People are so misinformed about it. Missionaries were able to record more detailed encounters with cannibals when they first arrived in the highlands regions than any other country... so automatically people label PNG as "Cannibal Country". The truth is, there are only a few small tribes that practice this and they live in the most inaccessible parts of the highlands. You'll be lucky (...or maybe unlucky) if you find one.
