My PS2 displayed the message "Please insert a PlayStation or PlayStation2 format disc," but the disc is the correct format. What's wrong?

That means the console could not read the disk. Try cleaning the disk and trying again. If you are persistant, it may eventually work. If nothing seems to help, you may need to clean the laser lens.
