Probably because they wear them after getting married in the Temple. Let me back up just a bit. If a male goes on a mission, he then gets to start wearing the garments. They are meant to remind us of covenants that we make in the temple and, despite what another person said, one does not have to get married or serve a mission before they start waring them.

They are called temple garments because we are first clothed with them in the temple. We acquire our first pair in an ordinance known as the "Washing and Anointing" - the significance of the temple garment is explained in the Endowment ceremony.
