the shock we are so nieve and so sure everything is ok in our world that an attack changed us forever a feeling of helplessness terror and fear was not an american thing

If we compare 9/11 and Katrina and the consequent action taken i think that the amount of people that died is not really the matter.

The shock of being attacked... and the fact that something that has ALWAYS been there in many of our minds has been taken away. What affected me most personally: I have memories of my father and I driving around the city, and he used to go out of his way to drive there, so I could hang out the sunroof and see if I could see the top of the towers. (I was only five or so...) I felt like that memory had been stolen away from me.

The shock...plus our whole sense of ease & mobility has been destroyed. Air/international travel is an ordeal and reminds us that we are always at risk. My work bldg installed metal detectors and cameras and hired addl security. Constant thorns in our side.
