I don't know much about the physiological mechanism. But from a practical / subjective perspective, emotions have two components: thoughts, and body sensations. Muscles tighten or relax, adrenaline or other hormones are released, senses are attuned or ignored, etc., all in response to thoughts. I'll skip the usual sermon about the importance of observing and experiencing all that :)

I was depressed and had anxiety back in the day. This caused baddd bad pains in my chest. What causes this im not sure.

The brain is a powerful thing! Just as people who medical science had given up can heal, sadness can cause certain muscles to tighten and ache including your heart. Shock and pain can completely interfere with your regular body functions - with sadness taking over to cause a literal heartache.

The body and mind are interconnected and emotional symptoms often reside in the organs, muscles and connective tissue. that's why exercise and bodywork (i.e. massage) are so important to releasing difficult emotions.

Probably because stress and sadness is so hard on your body! I know when I am stressed or sad I get head aches a lot and I am always tired!

when you and the love of your life seperate. it hurts your heart because your hearts are connected and if she goes to far its pulling on your heart too much so it hurts. eventually it snaps and causes extreme pain, which will be rebuilt, but permanently scarred.
