I rinse mine first. The previous owner (dishwasher came w/the house I bought last year) said it wasn't necessary, but it's just habit. On occasion something won't come clean (dried on egg is notorious); I will actually *gasp* wash it by hand in that case. :-)

I only rinse noodles off of wooden spoons. (I know, you're not supposed to put wooden spoons in the dishwasher!) We just got a new dishwasher, and it's fabulous...haven't had anything come out dirty (well, except when my daughter loads it and thinks she can pile stuff on top of each other and the water will miraculously get into the stuff on top!)

I usually give it a quick rinse in the sink - but only to get any big bits off, I don't use a sponge or anything on it, and then I put it into the dishwasher. I'd say that works just fine 99.9% of the time. If something comes out dirty, I'll hand wash it. My boyfriend wipes all the dishes with a soapy sponge before he puts them into the dishwasher. To me, it seems like a huge waste of time. If I'm gonna wash all the dishes with a soapy sponge I might as well just finish hand washing them, and not bother with the dishwasher at all!

I was told that the gunk on the plates will clog up the dishwaher drain system is not rinsed off first, due to the large amount being washed off at the same timeas opposed to handwashing where only one is dealt with at a time. It seems to be true with our dishwasher, which tends to leave mess if the drainage channels get clogged up.

I'll give something a quick rinse if there's something visible on it, but I don't go nuts if it doesn't all come off. So far, I've never had anything come out still dirty.

I rinse everything first, just because I don't want to attract ants or other bugs.
-
I rinse under hot tap and any baked on dishes i soak in boiling water to soften them before loading up the washer.
-
I don't rinse much--but I've never had anything not come clean...maybe it's because I have a newer dishwasher.
-
I scrub it until nothing's visible on it anymore. It's visibly clean but then I run it through so it can get all soaped up, kill germs, etc.
-
When I had a dish washer I would soak the dishes in hot water and then put them in

I wash them with soap and hot water first. I know, it's overkill, but I have always done this.

I just bung it all in after scraping off any excess food.
