emo, short for emotional, is kind of like the name says. these people just find reasons to cry and bitch about being different and misunderstood. goths are more hard-core wearing black, angry, don't care what people think about who they are or what they like.
-
Hey, I'm kinda into the whole emo thing but it does not mean I'm sad or want not to be noticed. I really like the music and style of clothing; I don't cut myself or anything like that...

The difference is different in every school and social setting, however MOST trends seem to be: Goth's wear dark colors, talk about death, killing, etc etc. Wear "gothic" symbols (pentagrams etc etc) though they often are ignorant of what they mean in the first place. Emo's talk about Death, Often wear alot of dark colors, Have a large amount of shitty music to listen to, and are often found to be cutters. The one similarity is that after a year or so they wake up, realize how stupid they are, and grow up from the trend.

goths hate everyone else emos are deppersted simple as that
-
Goths wear dark clothes, like metal music, and hate everything. Emos wear Tight, dark clothes, have a ridiculously long fringe and short hair. they like rubbish music about suicide and being a loner.
-
There is no difference. They are both labels that insecure people like to use to classify others. Nuff said.
-
that's like asking what's the difference between "prep and jock" Different but the same know what i mean? Goth, the music itself they listen to is different and they're method of dress is more loose fitting dark clothes. Goths are social people amongst themselves primarily. They're not all "angry at the world" Emo's Well they listen to different music like The Used and My Chemical Romance. They dress more compared to Punks' and they're hair is just as long, bangs etc... That's my "stereotype"
-
...I'm not so sure anymore. *Sigh*

The Difference between Emo And Goth: Emos Hate themselves Goths hate Everyone Emos Want to Kill themselves Goths Want to kill Everyone.

Good lord, what a bunch of tards... Except for vow of silence, there isn't one unbiased, honest answer among you. Ok. Easy version. Let’s start with the oldest and work our way up shall we? Goths (short for Ostrogoths or Visigoths 1 century BCE) were considered uncivilized heathens meaning they didn't live in a city, had there own laws, and were polytheistic. Thus the pagan symbology connection. People on the fringe of society. They were outcasts. Sound familiar (especially if you’re btw 13-28)? Let’s jump ahead- during the renaissance, gothic was used as a derogatory term describing the dark art, music and architecture that emerged in Germany and Italy. >jump< the European romantic age of shelly, Hesse, and Byron – dark horror stories and romanticism of death is the literary theme. Post age of enlightenment, there was a distain for the upper class. The movement stressed strong emotion as a source of aesthetic experience, placing new emphasis on such emotions as trepidation, horror, and the awe experienced in confronting the sublimity in untamed nature. Sound like angst? (vampire novels and romantic dress influence) >leap< 70s/80s Goth – punks were an angry and violent answer to s

Emo's the little red Muppet on "Sesame Street".

An emo is like a cross between a goth and a twelve year-old girl who still likes barbie dolls.

A few people here have opinions on that, assuming you meant goths: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/393424

In my opinion goths are the original version, emos being a cheap knock off. Kids that say they are emo in my opinion are just a punk type version of a goth. Goth's maybe dark but they're not suicidal like emo's. Goth's aren't all fat and ugly as some people suggest, I myself am a goth, I'm underweight if anything and have been told time and again that I'm rather beautiful. I don't use black as a label and I'm not doing it for attention, it's more of a personal protest for me. A silent protest, I became this way when my parents first separated because I wasn't listened too, I wanted to do something radical to shock my parents to their senses. It worked for some years but then they split again and this time for good. So I stay this way to remind myself of this protest. I also protest the bible because I believe it to be hypocritical but generally I remain silent about my reasons for being who I am. I have christian friends, they don't lecture me about being a goth and I don't lecture them about being a christian because that's their choice and this is mine.

Well....Emos have more emotions that goths. The word EMO is base off of the root word [emo]tional. Goths wear baggy pants and listen to punk and hard rock.Emos listen to more emotional music that when they are sad they can listen to it to cheer them up a little andwear tight pants and shirts. You can easally tell if someone is walking down the street if they are emo or goth. 1st sighn of a gotic person is that they are wearing black and oter colers mixed in. 2nd sighn is that their hair is probally spikey. 1st sighn of an emo is that they almost always were black. 2nd is that they probally have long black or blonde hair(sometimes short). thats all i can tell you know . BYE!!

I consider myself emo. SOmetimes i like to dress in all balck and maybe add a few colors to it. I like who i am i dont hate myself. When i feel an emotion it is very deep. I do not cut myself because it is really stupid. I also do not look for attention. I do however like to be socially outcast and not known by many.

I'm so tired of seeing this question around, this whole page is full of ignorant responses, especially JTP's. Goth has been around for a very long time. Emo is only about a decade old. There is a huge difference no matter what people think. To clear some things up, Goths are not satanic, we are not angry, and we do not hate everyone. We do not always talk about death and killing, or any of that crap. A majority of us are Wiccan but if you actually knew anything about the religion then you wouldn't be saying pentagrams are satanic. Goth's have a love for the finer things, We are artistic and we love to express it in fashion and in writing and paintings. We do tend to stick among our selves, but that is because people are spiteful and love to say stupid things such as the things JTP so pitifully put in his comment. A lot of kids in highschool do tend to take on gothic fashion but they are more emo than anything. Emo is a trend developed by high school kids, they are more emotional and open. People are confused these days as to what is the difference between goth and emo but that is because emo fashion was built around goth fashion. If you walk into a hottopic these days, that is what you can call emo. Emo kids are emotional and they dress very close to one another, they all dress very feminine, even the males and they listen to more emotional music like my chemical romance or afi.

I think emos are pussys and goths have balls lol

Emo may be more withdrawn and there's a certain style they wear (commonly the tight pants, interesting hairdos, etc) Not so much into the all black and/or chains. Goth is based more on darkness. Not always death, but just darkness and black, and almost surreal - associated with vampires and similar things. Commonly depicted by wearing mostly/all black, sometimes chains. Not the tight jeans, probably because the pants (or whatever) tend to be black. It is hard to explain.

GOTHS ARE NOT NESSERILY ANGRY AT THE WHOLE WORLD THEY JUST HAVE A DIFFERENT WAY OF EXPRESSING THERE EMOTIONS AND THEY DONT ALL BELIEVE IN THE SAME RELIGON IM GOTH AND IM CHRISTIAN SO THERE IS NO RELIGON TO GOTH ITS A STATE OF MIND SO REMEMBER THAT. AND EMO DOES NOT STAND FOR EMOTIONAL IT STANDS FOR EMOCORE AND PUNK WORD PRETTY MUCH AND NOT ALL EMOS CUT THEM SELVES. THE DIFFERENCE IN STYLE IS THIS GOTH BOYS-WEAR LOOSE CLOTHS ALL THE TIME EMO BOYS-WEAR TIGHT JEANS GIRL JEANS OUCH.AND TIGHT SHIRTS. GOTH GIRLS -WEAR TIGHT BLACK SHIRTS AND TIGHT JEANS SOMETIME BUT ALSO LOOSE. EMO GIRLS -WEAR TIGHT CLOTHS ALL THE TIME AND BOTH EMO AND GOTH WEAR BLACK CONSTANTLY SO THERE IS THE DIFFERENCE AND SIMILARITIES. GOTHS LISTEN TO ROCK WITH A DARK EDGE OR DIFFERENT TYPES OF METAL. EMOS LISTEN TO BANDS LIKE MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE AND OTHER STUFF. BOTH GROUPS ARE DEPRESSED ALOT TO AND MAD ALOT AT PEOPLE THAT MAKE THEM FEEL LIKE THEY DONT BELONG WHEN THEY DO.

i'm emo but i dont cut myself

I think that people shouldn't be labled. I think that someone was stupid enough to lable someone because they didn't look like the average person. So I am not going to tell the differnce between emo and goth because I think that emo and goth are just people who go about their bussiness and don't really care about what other people think. And the fashion is literally I think is very awesome and self-expressing the hair-styles in my opinion are pretty self-explanitory. They have an image and I think that that is just great and self-opinionated.

AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH! Okay, not I'm seriously annoyed! I mean, I'm goth, and reading all these posts make me extremely angry! Goth's don't hate the world, aren't unfriendly, and don't talk about killing! And if we do, It's because people who say stuff like that make us so mad that we do! You think we're like that because when you first see us dressed like goth's, you automatically decide to avoid us! WE ARE EXCACTLY LIKE YOU! the reason you think we're different is because you don't get the chance to know us! WE ARE FRIENDLY! but only friendly to people who can walk up to us and actually say hi! and we're happy! we're not depressed or emotionally deranged. I hope that after reading this, you'll be a little more friendlt toward us goth's.

Emo is short for Overly Emotional. Hence why many Emo's cut themselves, purge, don't eat whatever. They feel some sort of pain or emotion and do what ever they can think of get rid of it, like cutting, like sex... There isn't much of a difference between Punk/Emo/Goth. Have basic same sense of style, some of the same music... but Emo's do things that is beyond the norm-this doesn't mean alcohol or drugs, bigger than that-... I personally think that Emo is a somewhat separate form of Goth. Because the style, music, makeup almost everything is alike. While Emo's deal with pain by cutting or something as or more destructive, Goth's feel the pain too. They just don't necessarily deconstruct their bodies. Instead (in my opinion) they purposely isolate themselves from society, making themselves outcasts because no matter how much pain is there, they can't mutilate themselves, and they don't want to see anyone that cares for them get hurt... Punks are a little different in style. They'll wear bright colors, neon colors, but they do it to stand out. Say to society "Hey! I'm not gonna take your crap anymore! I'ma wear what I want, where I want, and I don't care how out there it is!" ... I also personally think that being punk/emo/goth comes in stages... and you start off either as an Emo or Punk. and then progress. If you start as Punk you go Punk, Goth, Emo. If you start as Emo you end up Punk. I only think this because of what I've seen happen around me... People going from Cutting to Recovering, to dying hair all sorts of colors and getting piercing' galore.. But there is no right or wrong answer to this question, so it's based on opinions.

well i dont wanna consider myself goth because i dont think i quite fit the actual subculture. not like an uber goth anyway. but i am flattered to be recognized as one. i love goth groups like sisters of mercy, bauhaus, mephisto walz, kommunity fk, and skeletal family. i also will wear the ideal clothing thats considered goth. my only concern is how long this emo trend will last. because its such a knock off in my opinion. it probably wont be long. why? cuz of the difference between goth and emo. goth has been around since the early 80s and still lives on 2day with your so-called "elder goths" the emos were also from the eighties but where do u find elder emos? they're hard to find because emo was a short-lived teenage fad that was destined to die from its own worn out angst. the goth subculture however still lives on because its more than a fad...its a lifestyle. now there seems to be a revival in the emo subculture that's already seems to be disappearing into some colorful "scene" image but unfortunately its gotten so mainstream that it might still last a pretty long time. i honestly wish it never came back with these new bands like dashboard confessional and the used because i hate being mistaken for an emo just cuz i wear black and bondage and have thick bangs. i find the music and concept repulsive. i don't mean to offend emos but seriously right now emo is taking over goth, punk, and metal. and we want our subcultures back without being tainted. its no wonder people get us confused and its no wonder it didnt last long back in the eighties. its seems to hardly have any originality cuz it takes from other subcultures. i seriously hope it goes away soon though because i hate it that i used to be noticed for what i wanted to be which is goth and now that this emo thing has gotten so huge that that's all im seen as now is some depressed emo when i was against the whole trend ever since it started to spread all over the mainstream like some virus. it just kills me that i cant have my title back as goth because some other teenage fad is taking over. i want it back soon.

I do not consider myself anything but back in high school i was tagged as a goth. Wore a lot of black with red or purple, black fishnet shirts, had fake fangs (because the ladies i thought were hot said it was sexy), a trench coat, spikes (lots and lots of spikes to keep people away) dyed my hair a different color every month and spiked it, goofed off a looot in class and yet still aced the classes i wanted to. Listened to a lot of death metal and music filled with indistinguishable screams and groans, Cradle of Filth for example. If anything, i am a watered down goth because the "real" goths i know are like in their 30's or 40's and dress up in medieval clothing, listen to dark wave and are awesome. Chicks in leather corsets, oh yeah. Emos started creeping up senior year. The dudes dressed like the chicks, tight everything and it was pretty hard to distinguish them apart from behind, making hitting on emos a risky business. ;P Some of the less popular dudes were whiney, girlish, over-dramatic and had their hair over one eye for some reason. The cool ones just chilled, partied and were actually fun to hang with, even though their clothes were waaaay tooo tight for me to even fathom comfort. The emo chicks were hot, the downside being an even MORE emotional girl. *shudders from bad memories* To sum it up, we are all gay. HAAhaaaa... no... really. I mean, what is the point of labeling? In the end, we are all fundamentally insane. If you are reading this part, awesome. I caught your attention, yay! You rawk! :D
