Because they are so sweet.

Parents magazine once said it was because of their being all curled up in the womb and that it takes awhile for their muscles and tendons to gain the ability to stretch out and uncurl. It takes a few months for them to get used to it. Remember how hard it its to put those cute booties and shoes on them because they just seem to curl up by themselves? LOL!!! When they get closer to walking and crawling they start to uncurl and reach for the floor.

during pregnancy the baby is adapted to the curled situation inside... and soon after birth it takes time for the body construction and muscle contraction to adapt to the free-will environment. eventually curling is a method of protection. most animals curl to protect their vital organs from harm.. (heart, stomach, etc) this is a natural anxious reflex to a strange (un-familiar) environment... also .. as I was a baby I remember my belly was 10 times more sensitive than anything else! now only my genetals :-$

my little grand daughter is 6 mths old - when she sits her toes and curled up tightly - can't remember my other 2 grand children doing this. Eliesha had a brain bleed before birth and she us under a specialist and they are very pleased with her progress and are looking for signs of cerbral palsy but so far cannot find any - they have never mentioned her toes curling they way they do. Maybe it is nothing but we will ask at her next visit at 8 months.
