  • No, just different.
  • We are all supposed to be equal in the eyes of the Lord, although the bible was written and translated by Man so is down to your interpretation.
  • No. The roles are different, and some of it is cultural and just realistic in terms of that time. But in terms of absolute, it sees men and women as not only equal, but children as equal too, in God's eyes.
  • Leviticus 27:3-7 states that a woman is either 1/2 or 2/3 the value of men.
  • How many women helped write the Bible? There's your answer.
  • No, as Bob Baylock said in his answer, the Bible is a book, it can't "See" anything. Some *People* see women as lesser beings, they just use the Bible as an excuse.
  • i dont think the bible can be held accountable its how the religions percieve what the bible says as in the catholic religion then yes women were percieved lesser beings backed up by the way they killed nearly 7 million of them casting them as the negative inbalance of man
  • The Bible seems to depict women as lesser beings when one looks at a few chosen verses. But not when one looks at other verses or, even more importantly, the message of the entire Bible. Sexism is against the teachings of Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church: Created in the image of the one God and equally endowed with rational souls, all men have the same nature and the same origin. Redeemed by the sacrifice of Christ, all are called to participate in the same divine beatitude: all therefore enjoy an equal dignity. The equality of men rests essentially on their dignity as persons and the rights that flow from it: Every form of social or cultural discrimination in fundamental personal rights on the grounds of sex, race, color, social conditions, language, or religion must be curbed and eradicated as incompatible with God's design. For more information, see Catechism of the Catholic Church, sections 1934 and following: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt3sect1chpt2art3.htm#1934 With love in Christ.
  • No. The bible PORTRAYS women as lesser being. But what do you expect from a book that was written mostly by men in a time where women were considered nothing more than chattel?
  • no read proverbs 31. it goes into great detail about how strong, independent, and important women are.
  • It was the men that wrote the book, that seen women as lesser beings than men.
  • No. If you want examples of religions or sacred texts that regard women as a lower form of life, or something intrinsically less worthy and noble than men, you'd have to look at ... well ... just about every pagan religion, past and present, including classic Hinduism, and also Buddhism and Islam. But the religion along with its religious stories and myths that probably had the worst view of women were the ancient Greeks - just consider the examples Pandora, Clytemnestra, Medea, Helen, Circe, Jocasta, Deianira, et al. - even Electra and Antigone in the myths are seen as self-righteous, vindictive, psycho witches ... the type that begins with a B.
  • Re. Farino: >>Leviticus 27:3-7 states that a woman is either 1/2 or 2/3 the value of men. << No, it most certainly does not. The passage occurrs in the section on vows. Just as today some people will in moments of desperation pledge to become a priest if God will only spare them from the perdicament they're in, people of old would pledge themselves, or in some cases their children or servants to Temple service if God saved them: "Heal my sick baby and I will devote him to Your service in the Temple." Leviticus 27 is setting the redemption values (the cost of buying back) for people given or pledged to God as servants in the Tabernacle/Temple. The value is set on the devoted person's approximate worth as a manual laborer, and varies far more by age than by sex. AGE........VALUE Of MALE......VALUE OF FEMALE 0-4..............5 shekels..........3 shekels 5-19...........20 shekels.........10 shekels 20-59.........50 shekels.........30 shekels 60 plus......15 shekels.........10 shekels All else being equal, males are given a higher value than females for the same reason 400hp engines have a higher value than 200hp engines: their capacity to move heavy objects. But females in the prime of life are given a labor value 6 times that of a male child, and twice that of a male senior citizen. Also, these were the prices that people had to pay to buy back pledged or given persons -- in other words Leviticus 27 made it less costly for them to get back their daughters than their sons. Does this put a lesser value on women or a greater one? It rings more of "women and children first!" if you ask me. Finally, if a man was so poor as not to be able to afford the redemption prices listed above, the priest was to consider his circumstances, and give him a discount based on what he could afford.
  • In biblical times women were treated worse than pack mules,Not much better today for them In the middle East. Thank goodness we now have our priorities straight at least in Canada.
  • No, for the Bible is the cornerstone of America, though MANY deny and/or ignore that. Women have freedom in America because of our Christian heritage. It is due to an abuse of our freedom that allows women to be feminists, for that is not even at all possible in Arab countries.
  • No, I do not think so. From Genesis 2:22, 23 - Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib He had taken out of the man, and He brought her to the man. The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man." God had created man and woman as equal and to be complementary to each other.
  • Yes, the role of women had been "Set in Stone" since before Scripture was recorded. So that what was recorded was from the persons (male) point of view for the period in which it was written. This is NOT GOD'S VIEW as U will please note our Savior was "Born of a Virgin Woman" who also was charged (as all mothers were) with His upbringing. U'll note too that even when grown Christ obeyed his Mother at the wedding Feast by making the Finest Wine in the world upon her request. From God, ALL Souls were created equal, the difference is what we do with them. John
  • Men wrote the bible
  • Isn't this one of the problems with the bible - you can find opposing views / quotes for most things if you look hard enough.
  • The Bible is clear to place women on the same level as men. There is no sexual discrimination going on. At the same token, there are definitely certain roles that God has created for women just as there are roles created for men. Not all roles are interchangeable. This does not equate to sexism. It simply equates to fulfillment of God's plan for us. Just as Christ is the head of the Church, man is the head of woman in a spiritual sense.
  • no, but every creature has its place in the universe and in the body of mankind. not everyone can be a hand or a foot. we all have our places in the body of life. for those who want to live in certain cultures, religious or otherwise, every culture has its norms. life is a lot easier when everyone fits in...nuff sedd.
  • Some people feel that the Bible is demeaning to women because it assigns headship to men but being under headship is not in itself demeaning. Headship contributes to the handling of matters in an orderly arrangement, and Jehovah is “a God, not of disorder, but of peace.” (1 Cor. 14:33) Jesus Christ is under the headship of Jehovah God, and he finds great satisfaction in that relationship.—John 5:19, 20; 8:29; 1 Cor. 15:27, 28. A relative headship is also assigned to man, particularly in the family and in the Christian congregation. God has not given to man absolute authority over woman; man must answer to his head, Jesus Christ, and to God for the way that he exercises such headship. (1 Cor. 11:3) Furthermore, husbands are commanded “to be loving their wives as their own bodies” and to ‘assign honor’ to their wives. (Eph. 5:28; 1 Pet. 3:7) The sexual needs of a husband are not put above those of his wife in God’s arrangement for married couples. (1 Cor. 7:3, 4) The role of a capable wife, as outlined in the Bible, emphasizes her value to the household and the community. It allows a broad field in which she can use initiative while demonstrating her appreciation for her husband’s headship. (Prov. 31:10-31) The Bible commands children to honor not only their father but their mother as well. (Eph. 6:1-3) It also gives special attention to caring for the needs of widows. (Jas. 1:27) Thus among true Christians, women can find great security, true appreciation for themselves as individuals, and personal satisfaction in their activity. The dignity of woman’s position in God’s arrangement is further shown by the fact that Jehovah refers to his own organization of loyal spirit creatures as a woman, his wife, the mother of his sons. (Rev. 12:1; Gal. 4:26) Also, the spirit-anointed congregation of Jesus Christ is spoken of as his bride. (Rev. 19:7; 21:2, 9) And from a spiritual standpoint there is no distinction between male and female among those called to share in the heavenly Kingdom with Christ.—Gal. 3:26-28
