Question

Help answer this question below.

Why is it you can get a soup that is like a meal at a Chinese take out for less than $2.00 and you can barely get a tiny coffee at some yuppie shop for the same price?

Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay.

At the moment people are willing to pay that price for coffee.

I still can't figure out paying over $20 for a hand bag. Let alone renting one.

Part of the difference is the difference between a takeout and a sit-in. The cost of the coffee is trivial: it is the cost of the comfy chairs, heating, cleaning, and making the coffee *right now*, whereas the soup is just doled out of a large cauldron sitting there. The other part is simply that the market will bear it.

That is the truth and the reason I stay away from those "Yuppie Uber Snob" coffee places. If I'm out on the go and get a craving for coffee, I stop at 7-11, or a Racetrack, a QT, or a Dunkin Donuts. I just don't feel the need to be part of the trendy "In crowd" and pay 3, 4, or even 5 dollars for a coffee. Besides , to me Starbucks coffee tastes like burnt mud. I just don't see the big attraction.

I think it's because they want and appreciate your patronage unlike the greedy US corporations.

I think part of the "mystique" of Starbucks, for example, is the yuppy snob appeal..anyone who can afford $4 for a simple cup of coffee is stating that he/she can afford it and is successful..whereas Chinese restaurants in general are simple, uncomplicated and not pretentious..they usually offer good food at a reasonable price and they do not purport to be anything other than they are.:)

It might be the cost or the rent and paying the workers.
