  • Part of the difference is the difference between a takeout and a sit-in. The cost of the coffee is trivial: it is the cost of the comfy chairs, heating, cleaning, and making the coffee *right now*, whereas the soup is just doled out of a large cauldron sitting there. The other part is simply that the market will bear it.
  • I think part of the "mystique" of Starbucks, for example, is the yuppy snob appeal..anyone who can afford $4 for a simple cup of coffee is stating that he/she can afford it and is successful..whereas Chinese restaurants in general are simple, uncomplicated and not pretentious..they usually offer good food at a reasonable price and they do not purport to be anything other than they are.:)
  • It might be the cost or the rent and paying the workers.
  • Stray cats... :-)
  • I think it's because they want and appreciate your patronage unlike the greedy US corporations.
  • That is the truth and the reason I stay away from those "Yuppie Uber Snob" coffee places. If I'm out on the go and get a craving for coffee, I stop at 7-11, or a Racetrack, a QT, or a Dunkin Donuts. I just don't feel the need to be part of the trendy "In crowd" and pay 3, 4, or even 5 dollars for a coffee. Besides , to me Starbucks coffee tastes like burnt mud. I just don't see the big attraction.
  • Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay. At the moment people are willing to pay that price for coffee. I still can't figure out paying over $20 for a hand bag. Let alone renting one.
