If American authorities can successfully prosecute foreign airlines for conspiracy to fix prices on freight and passenger prices, why can't they do the same for oil companies who fix fuel prices?

The oil lobby is much more powerful than the airline lobby.

They can - if they can prove price fixing. But there is no actual evidence that the oil companies are colluding in the price rises. most of the prices rises come from the rise in the price of crude oil, and the central operators in that are OPEC, who are sovereign nations. Of course, Big Oil is probably adding a bit on the side. But it is OPEC and the oil markets which are mostly to blame. But nobody likes it when it is not Somebodies Fault. Actually, the biggest cause of oil price rises is the Iraq war, for which blame Pres Bush.
