Is it ok to privately e-mail another AB member if they have a personal problem you think you can help them with but don't know if they'd be comfortable having the information posted in the public forum?

Sure... but I always ask on AB first, like in a comment thread... "Can I email you?" Just to be polite.

By putting their email addresses on their profiles or in comment threads users are effectively inviting all of us to mail them. However I think I would send a general, chatty sort of mail first and broach the issue. If they say go ahead you're clear to offer your thoughts, but if they ask you not to get involved, and you don't, you've lost nothing and they know they can rely on your discretion in future.

How nice of you to be concerned about a fellow ABer. If someone has their email on their profile, they welcome emails from others. I would identify myself as MM 1BM from AB and let the user know that I'd like to help.
