  • Sounds as though you are out over your head. You don't need a master's degree; you need to get a job.
  • You could right about the various distributed computing systems already in play, how they differ, perhaps how to improve upon them and how they acknowledge the contributing users. Such as BOINC's open-source distributed computing client, and lets say the Rosetta project that processes proteins. (I am running boinc working on the Rosetta project as we speak :P). You could even go into depth on some the the technical details of how take all the computed information, compile it and use this for the common goal of the dc project. That's where I would start :P But I'm only a sophomore in college so I have a little ways to go till I get to write mine :P :P
  • I would give you ideas but then it would compromise my dissertation. I free write everyday. The hard part I am having is building a prototype that show my ideas benefit to all of humanity. Some ideas might be, fault tolerant distributed filesystems on widely distributed systems. Self healing methods for the distributed grid. Advanced load balancing allowing, time critical work to be completed by near nodes and not so time critical work to be completed redundantly at far nodes. deterministic algorithms, which employ a darwin approach, survival of the fittest.
  • How about how various entities are leveraging the Internet for distributed computing. There are screensavers people download that causes their system to become a node on the largest distributed system in the world. It would be interesting to really quantify the type of power this technology commands such as raw processing power and calculations per second but then more so quantify by comparing results of particular tasks. As far as redundancy, with the Internet as your distributed system what is your MTBF, I mean when is the whole Internet ever down? And with services like Akamai you have all the GSS and general load balance support you could want, just look up what they use. Again these Internet distributed services merely leverage the existing infrastructure so your answer would contain the diversification of every technology alive on the Internet. I am thinking 14k is not enough words! -s
