The default way to change this is in Tools>>Options>>Tabs. You should be able to choose to open a new page in a new window, current tab, or new tab. If that isn't working you may want to download an extension to take care of it. I use Tab Mix Plus. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1122

I saw that this question is already answered but I came across this when it happened to me. My kittens walked all over my laptop and then this started happening. On Firefox, every link that I clicked opened a new window while my settings were set to open a new tab. Not only that but every time I tried to put my cursor next to a letter it would highlight the entire word. Another solution: hit [shift] 5 times in a row, a "StickyKeys" dialog will pop up. Hit [cancel] and it should fix your problem. :)
