While your leg and glut muscles provide the power that keeps your body moving forward when you run, your abdominal muscles provide the support to keep your body in an upright, slightly lean-forward position. Any deviations in your pace caused by going uphill, going downhill, uneven running surface, sudden attempts to avoid obstacles can all cause stress and strain on your abdominals resulting in soreness. Stretching and strengthening exercises on your abdominals prior to running will help reduce the incidence of abdominal pain.
