  • Do you happen to have a styptic pencil?
  • Pack it with flour.
  • It is always good to have STYPTIC POWDER in the house if you own animals. (Dog, Cat, especially Birds whose blood does not coagulate well and who can bleed to death if they do not receive quick medical attention when they pull out a main feather or catch and pull off a nail) If, by now the nail is still bleeding, one person needs to apply direct pressure to the nail, while another person needs to go to PetSmart or some other pet store open on a Sunday and buy a box of this product. It will stop the bleeding, pressure will help. On a dog, or even a cat, it should have stopped by now, but this product is always good to have if you have animals. (it can be used on people as well.)
  • styptic pencil or corn starch! I used corn starch for my iguanas... They can literally bleed to death in a matter of minutes from one nail cut too far!
  • Place an icecube on it nails for a few seconds or hold it paw under cold run water for a few second and that should stop the bleeding. If not then get your dog to the vet ASAP.
  • Are you a qualified veterinarian or animal groomer? These are the ONLY people who should be allowed to cut an animals nails, to prevent this very thing from happening. Would you let a baker perform open heart surgery on your child? This isn't any different. The suggestions given by other users are all great, but my advise would be to take your animal to see a vet as soon as possible. As Redhawk said, an animal can bleed to death very quickly if they don't receive proper attention immediately. Your animal isn't just bleeding, it is in pain. Please, in future, leave grooming like this to the professionals.
  • Its best to use styptic powder or styptic pencil, which are first aid product for dogs to stop minor bleeding, but if you dont have any...just cover the bleeding part of the nail with cornstarch or plain flour..and hold the dogs paw up to stop the blood flow which helps to slow down the bleeding...keep the nail clean, because the dog will get infected easily...use old but clean sock[which will help you as a bandage..and once the bleeding stoped, put cushioned dressing pad on the affected area and put the sock on the dogs paw pulling it all the way up,than tape the sock in the knee area of the dog leg to prevent it from slipping and than pull the rest of the sock back down over the paw..so create double layer..put the dog to rest..otherwise it wil start to bleed again..if so you must change the sock for clean one... Torned off nail will keep bleeding quite a lot..and its painful for the dog..so i always give my dogs an Evening Primrose oil pill..it will calm the pain down...and help the healing process... When taking your dog out keep the sock on for two days, because the nail will get infected..
  • Styptic powder or Quick Stop works very well. But if you don't have those on hand, then try some cornstarch,
  • corn starch.
  • A temporary fix would be to push the nail into a bar of soap. This helps control the bleeding.
