It's 'Shillelagh' and is a combination walking stick/club. The ones you see in the Tourist shops bear no resemblance to reality. The real item is used 'ad hoc' or in the Irish Martial art of - in english - 'Stick Fighting' I have my Fathers shillelagh - its now over a hundred years old, and it will pass to my oldest son. Controversy over the origin of the name but most agree its from an eponymous woods in the south of Ireland which the British feared as it was prime ambush territory.

It is like a walking stick but heavy enough to be used as a club, which was the primary use in ancient times
