With all the idiots with licences I see every day, and their 6,000 lb SUV's they drive, I say doing anything but HOLDING THE WHEEL WITH BOTH HANDS AND USING YOUR SIGNALS, ACCELERATOR, AND BRAKE PEDALS, AS WELL AS LIGHTS WHEN FOGGY OR RAINY(or night, perish the thought), AND STARING AT THE ROAD WITH RAPT ATTENTION, EMPLOYING AT LEAST A 25 FT CIRCLE OF SITUATIONAL AWARENESS AROUND YOU AT ALL TIMES!!!!!!!, shoud be banned. Driving is an activity in and of itself. If you're that ADHD, take the damn bus.

It is by the law that says you must be in full control of a moving vehicle! Specific laws are not required beyond that!

Hell to the effing yes. In California they have that new cell phone hands free law going in to effect the first of next month and I can't freakin wait. I can't count how many times I've almost been hit because some bro or bimbo is writting a text message or talking on a cell phone about some stupid shit while driving.

I agree--no texting. I can't think of anything more distracting. Would you read and write by other methods when you drive?

There was an accident in New Jersey about 6-7 years ago that involved a truck driver using a calculator to figure out his pay and mileage while he was driving. He didn't see the stopped traffic in front of him. Result: 5 dead.

Driving requires your full concentration. It's difficult even without distractions.

Yes, as well as talking on the cell phone without a hands free set. I was in an accident a few years ago (nothing serious), and the first question from both the police and the insurance company "where either of you using you cell phone at the time of the accident?". It's now one of the leading causes of accidents.

Common sense says DO NOT TEXT WHILE DRIVING!!! How can anyone be typing into a cell phone and watching where they are going at the same time. They cannot!!! I do not see anything wrong with hands free talking on a cell phone by using a head set but I would not hold a phone up to my ear and drive at the same time. I have an operator style headset for my cell phone. If I make or receive calls while driving, I put my headset on or I do not talk on the phone. Safety first always!

ever since i was crossing a cross-walk downtown and some chick BLEW through the cross-walk, yappin' away on her cellphone, not paying attention to anything around her...i now believe cellphones should be illegalized while driving all together. some military installations banned the use of cellphones while driving already...and it's working out pretty well.

Absolutely. Anything that divides your attention when you are driving is dangerous for yourself and others. They say there is no difference between holding a cellphone to your ear listening to a conversation and using headsets as far as divided attention and more possible to cause an accident. SO where does that leave texting with all that spelling and having to look at the phone to read replies. Ban it, yes!

But how do you enforce it?

people should not do it, but it should not be legislated. we are supposed to be a "free country" I feel we are getting to be a more fascist country. And by my definition of fascism I mean " a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascist) that exalts nation above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition. (Merriam-Webster dictionary) not necessarily Nazi. just like the USSR was never actually fully Marxist communist. Our constitution specifically provides for individual freedom at the risk to the detriment of the nation as a whole. but most of us are more than happy to give away our rights so we can feel a touch safer.
