  • It is by the law that says you must be in full control of a moving vehicle! Specific laws are not required beyond that!
  • Yes, as well as talking on the cell phone without a hands free set. I was in an accident a few years ago (nothing serious), and the first question from both the police and the insurance company "where either of you using you cell phone at the time of the accident?". It's now one of the leading causes of accidents.
  • Absolutely. If you aren't paying attention to the road, then pull over and text, for the love of Coffee.
  • I agree--no texting. I can't think of anything more distracting. Would you read and write by other methods when you drive? There was an accident in New Jersey about 6-7 years ago that involved a truck driver using a calculator to figure out his pay and mileage while he was driving. He didn't see the stopped traffic in front of him. Result: 5 dead. Driving requires your full concentration. It's difficult even without distractions.
  • Absolutely. Anything that divides your attention when you are driving is dangerous for yourself and others. They say there is no difference between holding a cellphone to your ear listening to a conversation and using headsets as far as divided attention and more possible to cause an accident. SO where does that leave texting with all that spelling and having to look at the phone to read replies. Ban it, yes! But how do you enforce it?
  • YES. I can't even dial a number while I drive, how are these people texting? I don't even like to be on the phone when I drive... I don't think being on the phone should be illegal because it's not -that- bad, but texting... yea.
  • It is already illegal in the UK, you can get points on your driving license and a fine.
  • Definitley, a person could so easily kill someone in that minute it would take to text, You'd have to be stupid and irresponsible to even think about doing that.
  • Yes! No explanation needed.
  • Yes, brother did this a couple days ago. I was so scared he would crash.
  • yes, its distracting - driving is dangerous enough w/o all the distractions
  • texting on a cell is totally moronic ban it outright!
  • ya it must be banned
  • Yes, and the driver should be beaten with their cell phone for being an idiot.
  • ...yes, especially while driving yourself insane playing the victim, bully, or rescuer....and trying to drive your car....
  • Anything that can be deemed as distracting should be banned while driving. Some people can't even listen to the radio in a vehicle w/o being distracted.
  • Definitely. I've done it before, though. Shame on me.
  • It already has been in Nashville, TN. If you get caught it's a hefty fine.
  • Absolutely, most people can't walk and chew gum at the same time.
  • yes it already is here in England although I very often see peopl doing it. I even saw a school bus driver doing it once so I contacted to the school to let them know. I never knew what the outcome was.
  • Yes..because it will cause a lot accidents.
  • people should not do it, but it should not be legislated. we are supposed to be a "free country" I feel we are getting to be a more fascist country. And by my definition of fascism I mean " a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascist) that exalts nation above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition. (Merriam-Webster dictionary) not necessarily Nazi. just like the USSR was never actually fully Marxist communist. Our constitution specifically provides for individual freedom at the risk to the detriment of the nation as a whole. but most of us are more than happy to give away our rights so we can feel a touch safer.
  • With all the idiots with licences I see every day, and their 6,000 lb SUV's they drive, I say doing anything but HOLDING THE WHEEL WITH BOTH HANDS AND USING YOUR SIGNALS, ACCELERATOR, AND BRAKE PEDALS, AS WELL AS LIGHTS WHEN FOGGY OR RAINY(or night, perish the thought), AND STARING AT THE ROAD WITH RAPT ATTENTION, EMPLOYING AT LEAST A 25 FT CIRCLE OF SITUATIONAL AWARENESS AROUND YOU AT ALL TIMES!!!!!!!, shoud be banned. Driving is an activity in and of itself. If you're that ADHD, take the damn bus.
  • ever since i was crossing a cross-walk downtown and some chick BLEW through the cross-walk, yappin' away on her cellphone, not paying attention to anything around her...i now believe cellphones should be illegalized while driving all together. some military installations banned the use of cellphones while driving already...and it's working out pretty well.
  • In my opinion, it should be banned. Multitasking is a good thing, but then, not in driving.
  • Of course not people who want to pass that law are just mad because they have no friends to text them haterz !!!
  • Hell to the effing yes. In California they have that new cell phone hands free law going in to effect the first of next month and I can't freakin wait. I can't count how many times I've almost been hit because some bro or bimbo is writting a text message or talking on a cell phone about some stupid shit while driving.
  • Yes, unless the car is in a safe location (like a house garage) moving 0 KPH. It could save hundreds of lives.
  • I'll go with peterpam's answer. Juggling whilst driving is pretty dangerous too - should that be banned? How about tying your shoelaces? http://mark.tranchant.co.uk/2008/07/texting-whilst-driving
  • well i personaly think its not an issue, in most states youll get a ticket for even looking at your phone, but my objective is to not to get pulled over..either witch way its not going to stop people from doing it..its repeditive.some peoply admit to texting and not looking at the phone..its our gen. where all gona die anyway
  • There is no possible way a driver can have control of their car and text at the same time. Anyone doing both should loose their drivers licence.
  • yes, get a blue tooth and put your voice and ears to work.
  • yes, for safety reasons
  • Yes. When someone is driving - they should be DRIVING! I have been run off the road, cut off and stuck behind people on the phone. It is very dangerous.
  • Common sense says DO NOT TEXT WHILE DRIVING!!! How can anyone be typing into a cell phone and watching where they are going at the same time. They cannot!!! I do not see anything wrong with hands free talking on a cell phone by using a head set but I would not hold a phone up to my ear and drive at the same time. I have an operator style headset for my cell phone. If I make or receive calls while driving, I put my headset on or I do not talk on the phone. Safety first always!
  • Yes. There are way too many accidents every year caused by it.
  • Yes, so should talking, even when it's not handheld
  • yep a girl in a civic almost bought it last week running a red light Good thing the F-350's have 4 pistion calipers
  • It is illegal in the state of alaska
  • yes, i do it, but its pretty dangerous!
  • Using cell phones for any purpose while driving should be banned.
  • Absolutely!
  • Yes, yes, yes. Every time someone encroaches my lane, it's because they're on the cell phone or texting. You want to kill yourself, fine. But don't take me with you. There's nothing so important you have to say that you need to do it while driving. I'm not a big fan of forcing people to do or not do things, but sometimes you just have to legislate stupidity.
  • People need to take a break from the mindset that everyone needs to be in contact with everyone 24/7.....texting while driving is crazy.
  • Hell yeah! It's so stupid to do that when driving.
  • YES, as should talking on a cellphone, eating food, rummaging through your purse, etc!
