You should initially read this site about working holiday visas: http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagename=OpenMarket/Xcelerate/ShowPage&c=Page&cid=1018721068240 and of course http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=%22working+holiday+visa%22+UK&meta= I worked there on such a visa in late 90's London.(it seems you still dont need a job lined up to get it). I found it very easy to get hospitality jobs, (even though I had little experience), many of the pub jobs come with optional room & food provided. If you live in a largish capital city, then seek out a local travellers hostel / YHA, and ask if there's anyone from Europe (to talk to). Often the seasoned travellers in them will know the latest tips, and be able to suggest ideas about whats best for you to do. If $ is a problem (and you need to get paid asap after arriving) then consider calling some of the youth hostels ahead to see if they need a cleaner / caretaker (in exchange for board). That way you can relax about (not) paying rent, while you look for something more permanent and appropriate. I also did "live-in" aged carer work, which provides free board in exchange for a few hours a day cooking / cleaning for an older person, also good to save $ while looking for a decent job. The biggest issue I found when travelling was that all the really useful information and opportunities arent available until you're actually in the country. Good Luck! (Im envious!)
