  • Both. Actually, the CEO of Deseret Book, a Church-owned media business is a woman. The Church has taught that a mother should be home raising the children. However, the ultimate decision is with the couple. As well, if there are no children at home, what purpose would there be in the woman staying at home?
  • If I may, from personal experience, state that the Church encourges women to stay home and to be educated enough to teach their children and help educate them. However, the Church also recognises the need in some situations for the wife/mother to work, either full or part time, to help suppliment the income unachieved by the husband/father. While I, of myself, have an excellent job, and due to some extensive student loans, I cannot always meet my obligations for the family. So I have another job that helps but cannot secure my family. So my wife works part time to help out.
  • Family is paramount in Mormon culture and most LDS people will agree that the traditional role of mom at home is best for the children. Few FMCC (Family, Marriage and Children Counselors) professions would disagree with this belief. Certainly, Dr Laura (Jewish) argues strongly every day to callers that "you are your childrens' mother" and that moms need to stay home with the kids. So this is not really a Mormon idea; it is the traditional makeup of the family. The LDS Church strongly encourages this arrangement. But reality is reality and many moms must work. Nobody gets kicked out of the church for this. Many Mormon women are respected professionals. Ultimately, in all family relationships, the ultimate decision has to be made by the family, not the church.
