The stern look that accompanies the stern word. Usually the *look* does the trick.

I've spanked my child with my hand when he was little but I'd never take my fist to a child. More so a tap on the behind to let him know after repeatedly telling him to stop that, quit that your going to get someone hurt, I said stop that then I gave him smack on the behind. To let him know not to do what ever it was. The only one I've ever took my fist to was an adult or when I was a kid to another kid. Why would anyone take their fist to a kid?

It would never even cross my mind to use a fist on a child.
