Do you keep the fuel tank quite low? If so, it may be that a bit of sludge from the bottom of the tank has be dragged up into your engine. this can be cleaned out by adding a fuel detergent to your tank or, alternatively, you will need a friend to press the accelerator whilst you apply a clean, lint free cloth at the top of the carburetta until the enginge cuts out. It could also be your air filter that needs changing. Failing that The best thing to do is to take it to a garage and have a mechanic look at it.

My car had a 1/2 of tank of gas in it when this started. It stalled out two days prior when I had to drive through some water on the road. Not a lot, but enough to spray past the side mirrors. Worked fine afterwards, then without warning started the above. I will try the following, but you should know I have 131,000 miles on this car. However, I spend a lot of maintence. After a week of sitting in the garage (my husband said drying out) it is still doing the above. I do smell something, like fuel when I turn the car off.

I have a 1995 Taurus with 57,000 miles and it kind of did the same thing you are describing, and after having the engine checked and everything else, I broke down and took it to the dealer, where I found out that my fuel filter was clogged and I wasn't getting enough gas to the engine. I was the darn weirdest thing, it would stall, then start then idle rough then it's be fine, then the next day it'd do it again. It hasn't done it since. It presented itself like an electrical problem. It couldn't hurt to have that looked at.

My husband is wondering whether or not it could be a problem with the transmission. The car has sat in the garage for better than a week and starts right up. However, the minute, the second it is placed into gear. BAM! It dies. He put the car in neutral and blew stuff out of the exhaust. We are getting an air filter, and a fuel filter tomorrow. I will let you know. Please tell me if this sound like major transmission symptoms. Thanks,

Oh, I almost forgot. Where and how do you find and replace the fuel filter on a 1999 ford taurus V6 Duratec engine SHO 3.0 with about 131,000 miles. Could it also be the shut off switch on the fuel pump shut off switch or fuel pump. Anything sounds better than transmission.
