Just sounds like a bad alternator or a bad battery. When the battery drops just below the threshold of the power required to start the engine, the solenoid (a small cylindrical electromagnet) will still engage, usually clicking 4-8 times per second. All your accessories will still work and the lights should as well, but be dimmer than normal. If you charge the battery or jump start it, and it drives fine but then will not restart after being turned off either the battery is not holding a charge because it is dried out or the alternator is not charging the battery properly. Replace the battery. If the problem continues, check the drive belt for proper tension and replace if necessary, and take the alternator in to a shop to be tested. Replace it if it's bad.

I have a 69 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. I got the exact same problem when I first got the car. It starts sometimes. But it won't start sometimes. Then a mechanic visited my house and helped me with the Rolls Royce's break problem. Then I tried to start the car, and it won't start. But luckily, as he walked passed the right side of the car while the hood was open, he noticed a small electrical spark on the right side of the engine near the passenger's dash board. He said, "Wow! Wait. I think I saw something fishy." Then he did something to it. Then he said, "Okay. Now try to start the car again!" I turned the key, and the car started immediately! Turns out that there is a relay under the hood, at the right side, near the passenger's dash board, you can see it right away when you open that hood, the connection was loose. He tightened it up for me. That was all. The previous owner sold that car to me cheap because of this problem I think.
