I don't see how these songs can slow down your computer unless you have virtually no spare hard disk space. It's more likely that you've picked up a load of adware and spyware. Probably viruses as well. You know what they say - there's no such thing as a free lunch.

I will assume you have .mp3 files, and they probably average 5Mb each, which runs into 12500 Mb, or 12.5 Gb, the equivalent of 3 DVDs or about 25 CD-ROMs in mp3 format, with some generosity built in. If you have burning software, you can safely backup the song files for very little cost and not a lot of time. I use CD Creator 9 and it works reliably for me. Test the backups before you erase them. Another option is an external USB hard disk. Mine are each 400 Gb, and I have 3 of them for various purposes. This is a fast and reliable technique. They cost about $130 at discount stores, and are immediately functional with WinXP.

Burn them on to CDs, then do a drive wipe. simply deleting things from your computer does not take them off your drive.

If you want to delete the songs off your computer, but not your iPod (after a back up to dvd/cd first, of course) you have to make sure that you DO NOT have autosync turned on. With autosync on, whatever is in your library, is on your iPod. Whatever is not in your library, is not on your iPod. Therefore, turning off autosync will let you put whatever you want on your iPod, when you want it. (its as simple as dragging the songs from your library and onto the iPod on the left side of iTunes.) Note: You cannot however drag songs from your iPod onto your hard drive. Crazy Apple and their anti piracy settings.
