Why do people insist on giving negative points for asking an honest "I want your opinion" question? Shouldn't you just rate the answers you don't like instead?

It beats me, an opinion is asked for, we live in a day when we are all entitled to an opinion and then it is judged as unhelpful. It was never intended to be of any use other than to honestly answer a question! I do not bother to mark down but to award what I think are good questions and answers!

I think you answered your own question, at least the first part. Some questions are loaded (rhetorical) and have no correct answer. Like asking, "Why do you hate America?"

Why? Because the downraters are being trolls to you. They want to convert you into their opinions, and they believe that DR'ing you will make you change our mind instead of using words to explain their point. Sometimes - SOMETIMES, not always - those "I want your opinion" questions are a way for people to feel better that their feelings, thoughts or behavior and right or approved of. Maybe because they're guilty, or in a troller's case, maybe because they want to have support for their case, so that those who support their case will support rejection of the opposing case.

I think people who give negative points love the power it gives them to "judge". I have never given a negative point to anyone..don't see the value in it! :)

Negative points are nonsense, because it should either be ignored, or flagged ... BUT it's a slap, and one to many ABers like to give.

I don't know. Maybe some of the questions themselves offend their sensibilities but I would have thought it was the answers that they would downrate rather than the questions.

It is not just trolls, there are many who will downrate you anonymously because you dared to have an opinion contrary to theirs. Some of these are high enough up the AB tree to know better. But hey! It is just the Internet, not the be all and end all! Fuck 'em!

I never downrate anymore. I did when I first started here, but later determined it was pointless :)

i completely agree. i asked a genuine, completely in-offensive question and some joker gave me 5 negative points for it!! i have never given a negative point, if i dont like a question i just ignore it, clearly some people just like to be shits!
