  • It does not. It is only a false myth. You can see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buttered_cat_paradox for more info, but I don't know why that myth was started, since it is false.

  • The Mythbusters TV show covered this myth. The truth is that it really doesn't fall butter side down any more often than it falls butter side up. What does have an effect on how it drops is how hard you push when buttering. If you push hard, and create a concave side to the toast (where the butter is) it's more likely to catch the air and flip over - potentially flipping the butter side down. However, it's unlikely that even that will have any effect on something falling such a short distance to the floor.
