An artichoke. They are tasty, intricately different in the leaves, they have many layers that extend very deeply, long lasting, protective and mothering of the furry middle, and most of all, it surrounds a big delicious heart.

Belgian endive. I'm Belgian, I've got so many layers to me and it takes a bit of effort to discover them. They are very tightly wrapped around myself for protection. I often hide in the dark so I'm sometimes hard to find. But bring me out to the light, peel off a few outer layers and I'm not so bad after a good steaming or braise:-)
