Probably not. My guess is that the myth was spurred by misinterpreted fossil "evidence", similar to the wooly mammoth skull turned cyclops or dinosaur bones turned dragon.

No. The closest I've seen it to being a somewhat "real" unicorn was this hyped one-horned goat, that I believe Ringling Brothers Circus paraded years ago. http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,966879,00.html?promoid=googlep
