  • It could have been Mohammed (I think that he would be a much more likely candidate for 'the false prophet' if 2 Corinthians is true, since Islam has almost as many followers as Christianity does, CERTAINLY a lot more than Mormonism alone has.
  • I questioned the same thing at one point, and I firmly believe that he was/is.
  • If you read a biography of Joseph Smith he was a carnival huckster/grifter who went around saying he could find gold in people's farm fields by putting a hat over his eyes. Not quite the trusted prophet type.
  • I believe this to be true....;)
  • I believe that there are many 'false prophets' not just Joseph Smith. You had David Koresh, Jim Jones, several other cult leaders and anyone else that proclaims to be a prophet or Christ.
  • 1) "In the Aсts of the Apostles, Paul and Barnabas encountered a false prophet named Elymas Bar-Jesus on the island of Cyprus. In Actá¹£ 13:6-12, we read:" "'You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord? Now the hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to be blind, and for a time you will be unable to see the light of the sun.'" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_prophet 2) And who are these false Сhrists and these false prophets? "And it came to pass that after there had been false Сhrists, and their mouths had been shut, and they punished according to their crimes; " "And after there had been false prophets, and false preachers and teaсhers among the people, and all these having been punished according to their crimes;" Words of Mormon 1:15-16 Source: http://quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/m/mormon/mormon-idx?type=DIV1&byte=406326 3) Here is a list of "Unfulfilled religious propheсies": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_unfulfilled_Christian_Prophecy
  • Look at Joseph Smiths first visions, there are several accounts and take this in account. 2Cor11 [13] For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. [14] And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. [15] Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
  • No..all prophets are false. There is no such thing as prophecy...just look at the track record.
  • "But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in My name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.' And if you say in your heart, ‘How shall we know the word which the LORD has not spoken?’ when a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him. Deuteronomy 18:20-22 (New King James Version) "For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works. 2 Corinthians 11:13 (KJV) Some of Joseph Smith's false prophecies: 1. Jesus would return in 1891 2. God would always deliver Smith from his enemies 3. United States government would be overthrown 4. There would be a temple built in Zion (in Missouri) that he would dedicate 5. The Civil War would engage all nations Yes, I think this proves that Joseph Smith was a false prophet.
  • No; Joseph Smith is truly a prophet of God. As you read the Book of Mormon, ponder on its message and feel the Spirit present. Most importantly, get down on your knees in humility, and Ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if it is not true. He will reveal the truth of it unto you by the Power of the Holy Ghost. You will know of a surety; there will be no question or doubt in your mind. God has His way of assurance via the power of the Holy Ghost that there will be no doubt at all. There are false prophets in existence, nevertheless; Yes - many of them - not just one.
  • It is my opinion that you should question all prophets, and listen to your heart. and then question your heart to make sure you heard it right. there have been, and still are, many false prophets. I feel that these are the people that have caused many of the problems that have given christianity such a black eye in recent years. but specifically, Joseph Smith? I really don't know. I wonder, but if he is a false prophet, he is not the worst one.
  • Paul warns of false prophets. Yes he does. There are many false prophets. Joeseph Smith is just one of them. Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, David Koresh, Mary Baker Eddy, Jim Jones, Gordon Hinkley, Orson Pratt, Mormon ... There are many false prohets http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=Mormonism+false+prophets+and+blasphemy&spell=1
  • You are quite wise and discerning. The reasons why Joseph Smith is demonstrably a false prophet is a LONG topic but a cryptic list includes (but is not limited to) Joseph Smith's: 1) Numerous unfulfilled prophecies. http://www.ils.unc.edu/~unsworth/mormon/unfulfilledprophecies.html 2) Use of Occult practices like scrying and Shamanism. http://www.concernedchristians.com/index.php?option=com_fireboard&Itemid=42&func=view&id=79046&catid=3#79046 http://www.concernedchristians.com/index.php?option=com_fireboard&Itemid=42&func=view&id=73023&catid=522 3) Incorporating Free Masonry into the LDS Temple ceremonies - it is rooted in Kabbalah which is occultic) http://www.concernedchristians.com/index.php?option=com_fireboard&Itemid=42&func=view&id=69507&catid=522 http://www.concernedchristians.com/index.php?option=com_fireboard&Itemid=42&func=view&id=72979&catid=522 http://www.concernedchristians.com/index.php?option=com_fireboard&Itemid=42&func=view&id=72975&catid=522 4) Fulfilling every Old and New Testament test for a false Prophet. • Probably more like L Ron Hubbard of Scientology.
  • You should destroy the Book of Mormon, it is a dangerous as a Ouija board or tarot cards. These things are straight out evil and should be avoided. Unless you are strong in your faith and your relationship with Jesus Christ. You have a strong network of fellow believers... You should not test God. Reading this book is very harmful, without the full Armor of God. The book is written in such a way as to appear wholesome and inspired of God. Yet it is in complete contradiction to God's word. A suggest setting the book aside. Going to Christian Ministers and ask them questions you have. Or doing a simple search on Mormonism. Or any of the cults for that matter. There are plenty of sites on the internet that will give you line for line doctrinal comparisons between Mormonism and Christian beliefs. If you dig deep enough you will find some very interesting facts about the Mormons. The lies deceit thievery polygamy having there own military bank money Joseph wanting to be president etc etc etc. It is like the movie, "The never Ending Story" It changes and molds to accommodate what ever comes its way.
  • jack , keep reading, sounds like u can figure this one out for urself...reading and reasoning give u knowledge of HIS WORD .. and that's the only way to know false teaching and false prophets...
  • Actually the passage that you're citing is warning about false apostles not prophets. Now given that small adjustment: SHORT ANSWER: Yes, based on the evidence I think that it's reasonable and logical to conclude that Joseph Smith fulfilled the criteria that Paul sets out in 2 Corinthians 11 for a False Apostle. So YES is the answer to your question. LONG ANSWER: Let's look at the passage in question in it's full context: 2 Corinthians 11 (New International Version) 3 But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. 4 For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough. 5 But I do not think I am in the least inferior to those "super-apostles." 6 I may not be a trained speaker, but I do have knowledge. We have made this perfectly clear to you in every way... ...12 And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about. 13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve. So, it's clear that Paul was talking about FALSE APOSTLES not "a false prophet" as you put it. And what did Paul say would be the indicator of these "false apostles?": 1) They would preach "another Christ." (v.4) 2) They would be trained (implying polished, articulate, and persuasive) speakers - and it's implied with "secret knowledge" to boot! (v.6) 3) They will falsely claim to be true Apostles thus elevating themselves via boasting. (v.12&13) 4) Like Satan himself they may masquerade as an Angel of light. (v.14) 5) But they will definitely masaquerade as "servants of righteousness." (v.15) 6) "Their end will be what their actions deserve." (v.16) So given that "plumbline" how does Joseph Smith compare? 1) They would preach "another Christ." (v.4) YES - ACCORDING TO GORDON B. HINCKLEY "Paris, France - In a surprising admission during last month's three nation European speaking trip, Mormon president Gordon B. Hinckley stated that the Christ he believes in is not the same Christ as the one followed by those outside the LDS Church. Hinckley quoted unnamed critics of the LDS Church who claim that Mormons do not believe in the traditional Christ and then he agreed with them. The LDS Church News reported: "In bearing testimony of Jesus Christ, President Hinckley spoke of those outside the Church who say Latter-day Saints 'do not believe in the traditional Christ. No, I don't. The traditional Christ of whom they speak is not the Christ of whom I speak. For the Christ of whom I speak has been revealed in this the Dispensation of the Fulness [sic] of Times'" (June 20, 1998, Deseret News)" http://www.watchman.org/lds/gbhjesus.htm 2) They would be trained (implying polished, articulate, and persuasive) speakers - and it's implied with "secret knowledge" to boot! (v.6) I doubt that anyone who's read any account of Joseph Smith's life would deny that he possessed all these qualities and in abundance! Take your pick: - "No Man Knows My History" Fawn Brodie - "Rough Stone Rolling" Richard Bushman - "An Insider's View of Mormon Origins" Grant Palmer The story surrounding Joseph Smith in this regard is clear and consistent. 3) They will falsely claim to be true Apostles thus elevating themselves via boasting. (v.12&13) Joseph Smith said of himself: "Come on! ye prosecutors! ye false swearers! All hell, boil over! Ye burning mountains, roll down your lava! for I will come out on the top at last. I have more to boast of than ever any man had. I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam. A large majority of the whole have stood by me. Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I. The followers of Jesus ran away from Him; but the Latter-day Saints never ran away from me yet. You know my daily walk and conversation. I am in the bosom of a virtuous and good people. How I do love to hear the wolves howl! When they can get rid of me, the devil will also go." (Address of the Prophet—His Testimony Against the Dissenters at Nauvoo; Sunday, May 26, 1844; as printed in History of the Church Vol. 6, p. 408-412) 4) Like Satan himself they may masquerade as an Angel of light - or claim to be their messenger. (v.14) The introductory page of the D&C, 3rd paragraph says; “This took place in the early spring of 1820. In September, 1823, and at later times, Joseph Smith received visitations from Moroni, an angel of light, who revealed the resting place of the ancient record from which The Book of Mormon was afterward translated”. Joseph Smith’s Testimony 2:30, 47 says, “While I was thus in the act of calling upon God, I discovered a light appearing in my room, which continued to increase until the room was lighter than at noonday, when immediately a personage appeared at my bedside, standing in the air, for his feet did not touch the floor”. 5) But they will definitely masaquerade as "servants of righteousness." (v.15) Joseph Smith made the following statement at a time when he had secretly already taken at least 33 Polygamous wives: "When I love the poor, I ask no favors of the rich. I can go to the cross—I can lay down my life; but don't forsake me. I want the friendship of my brethren.—Let us teach the things of Jesus Christ. Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a downfall. Be meek and lowly, upright and pure; render good for evil, If you bring on yourselves your own destruction, I will complain. It is not right for a man to bear down his neck to the oppressor always. Be humble and patient in all circumstances of life; we shall then triumph more gloriously. What a thing it is for a man to be accused of committing adultery, and having seven wives, when I can only find one." (Address of the Prophet—His Testimony Against the Dissenters at Nauvoo; Sunday, May 26, 1844; as printed in History of the Church Vol. 6, p. 408-412) 6) "Their end will be what their actions deserve." (v.16) Please refer to embedded video. So based on the evidence I think that it's fair to conclude that Joseph Smith fulfilled the criteria that Paul sets out in 2 Corinthians 11 for a False Apostle. So, again, YES is the answer to your question.
  • Jesus Christ told us how to distinguish a false prophet from a true prophet: Matthew 7:15-20 "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth devil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them." So to answer that question look at the fruits of Joseph Smith. Are the things he brought forth good or bad? You are reading the Book of Mormon, are it's teachings good or evil?
