i believe the "box of rain" may be referring to his heart. It s there if you need it, leave it if you dare. if you think about it the song is pretty sad. If his heart is a box of rain then it must be hurting.

The song was written by Phl Lesh (music) and Bob Hunter (lyrics) when Phil's father was dying of cancer. What do you want me to do ? To do for you to see you through is Phil asking his father what he needs of course. A box of Rain I would think would refer Literally to a box of tissues. But obviously it means much more than that in a Metaphoric sense.

Robert Hunter himself says the following; From a letter from Robert Hunter: well, I don't like to do this, since it encourages others to ask about what I had in mind when I wrote a song, and mostly you'd need to have my mind to understand even approximately what I had in it. By "box of rain," I meant the world we live on, but "ball" of rain didn't have the right ring to my ear, so box it became, and I don't know who put it there.
