92 = fuel injection..
Black smoke = Running rich
Start up but quit = problem when it warms up.
I would try replacing the coolant temperature sensor. Make sure it is the one the engine computer uses, not the one for the temp gage, some vehicles have both.
Just my guess.
just a thought ...you might have dirt in the tank or in your carb /jets.....a clean fuel system is a happy fuel system!
i had a bronco 2 that did the same thing , and it took me a little wile to figer it out i been working on fords all my life you need to check your fuel pump , that what was worng with mine good luck to you

You're reading 92 Ford F150, 8 Cy. Wont crank, only sputters w/blk smoke. 24 hrs fired right up, 3 mi down the road quit. Again sputtered black smoke. Added a new fuel pump, fired right up. 18 mi later quits. At the shop idles fine, but on the road, quits. Why?
