  • Immediately after birth, but these kids just never listen!

Lol that sounds like my mom's approach. When I was born the doctor smacked me on my butt and said good luck number 7 you're pretty much on your own from here on out!
  • 6-21-2017 Isn't that wonderful. You are concerned about taking care of the nation's children. So loving and kind. Keep up the good work.
    • Linda Joy
At least I'm not afraid to ask a question.

There, you see? I try to be nice and I only get sly insults. Please don't answer my posts if you can't maintain better manners than that.
    • Linda Joy
Oh my bad! I mistook your obviously sincere comments for sarcasm! (Eye roll)
    • Jewels Vern
All is forgiven. Can we be friends now?
    • Linda Joy
      Sure!
    • Jewels Vern
      That makes me happy!
  • When they hit double digits. 10 year olds should get limited time alone to practice for later.
    • Linda Joy
      Practice independence?
  • 3 years old.
    • Linda Joy
Should they be doing their own laundry by then? Lol
  • When they stop becoming children. But technically nobody ever stops becoming a child as they will always be their parents child.

I think that's part of the problem. According to the medicine labels at age 12 you've stopped being a child but we all know that the brain doesn't become fully developed until the early twenties. And the concept of teenage didn't even exist prior to 1920s. Now sometimes I think it continues until old age.
  • i think it depends on the child and how mature they are, they're all different
    • Linda Joy
But doesn't it also depend on parenting? I think some parents nowadays want to keep their children dependent instead of helping them become independent and self-sufficient.
  • The earlier the better. Kids need to learn to be independent.

I think parents are crippling children when they don't teach them to be independent. On the other hand it's just a little sad when you realize they no longer need you. But satisfying at the same time because that's the point right?

Correct. I think one of the main problems with kids today is that they're all coddled. It sometimes makes me feel bad when my daughter asks me for help with something and I tell her "No. Figure it out for yourself." It seems heartless sometimes but I want her to be able to be able to be independent.
    • Jewels Vern
Coddled? In some areas it is considered a crime to let a child leave the house alone. It has been about thirty years since I saw a child outside a church or school yard.
    • Hardcore Conservative
I hear that. Gone are the days when dad sends you out of the house and tells you to not to come back until dark.
  • The process of learning independence should start right away, slowly at first, and complete by the 18th birthday. Of course, things never go ideally. If a young adult has independence issues, it shouldn't be "sink or swim," but they need to understand that they are adults, and fully culpable for their own selves at that age.
  • Middle school years.
