Aleister Crowley introduced the modern era to the spelling 'magick'; however, no one seems to be entirely certain of why. Many say it was to differentiate between the magic that a stage magician performs, and the magic that a magician performs. Others say that it was to make his gematria work. Still more say he wanted to distance himself from the Golden Dawn (he had quite a spat with them). I've heard a few people say he just liked to sound grandiose, and used outdated, historical spellings to achieve a ritual state of consciousness.
Modern writers on Wicca tend to use this spelling. I have no real explanation as to why, since Aleister Crowley was definitely not Wiccan. Even though Gerald Gardner met Crowley right before Crowley died, Gardner's books use the 'magic' spelling. Many Wiccans today have adopted the 'magick' spelling.
Not all of us do. Some do to keep it separate from the word "magic" that the rest of the world knows and the connotations they associate with it. The rest of us just use the original word for we do not care what the rest of the world thinks of our beliefs.
Wiccan spell it with a "k" in order to differentiate what they consider "real magic" from stage magic (such as the tricks done by David Copperfield and Houdini).
because he didnt konw how to spelll.... see neither do i ...but more honestly not all praticners use it with a k .. however magic and magick are to me at least the same.. a magician uses tricks so there's nothing supernatural behind it ....
they're not particularly good spellers
I'm a Wicca, and i would like to know if anyone could point me in the direction to a good website. For spell and tools.

You're reading Why do Wiccans spell the word 'magic' with a 'k'?
Comments
Not all wiccans spell it with a K, it's a personal preference, Crowleyites tend more to the Magick spelling though.

True, not all Wiccans or witches use this form of the word and it is generally more associated with Ceremonial Practitioners and I believe is currently the form used by groups such as the Ordo Templi Orientis, which is a contemporary of the Golden Dawn and Alister Crowley. However, it has been commonly adopted by many, even outside the Wiccan structure, to connote the differences as described above by AntigoneRising.
