  • I suspect it was named after the town Throop in Dorset in England (I'm also sure there's a Throop in Hampshire, which was my original answer but I can't find any evidence at present, given the meaning below it wouldn't surprise me if there are actually several "throop"s about) http://www.swuklink.com/BAAAGCHO.php which has lots of information on this rather obscure place, says that the name "throop" derives from the Old English "Throp" which means "Secondary settlement". The name has also appeared in earlier times as "La throup" (in the 12th century) later "Latrop", and "Throppe" (recorded in 1540)
  • The town of Throop was named for Dr. Benjamin Henry Throop, the Lackawanna Valley's first physician.
