Is there a specific type of person who is constantly second best, or am I just surrounded by a bunch of people who, according to literally everyone I know, are better than me?

There is a place for second-bests. My wife will only play second violin or viola, to support the firsts. My own job requires that I not be a specialist, but "pretty good" rather than the best in half a dozen different things. (I'm a member of a small team translating the Bible into a foreign language. That means I have to be pretty good in five different languages. The only way to be great in any of them would be to ignore the other four.) Medicine is full of specialists, but most of the time you want somebody who's pretty good in everything. P.S. Your picture and personality seem nice, and that's a lot more important!

Answer 3 out of 3

I'm never best at anything. But if your always second best at things, it's still better than always being worst, right?
That shouldn't even be the main gauge anyway. Have fun and feel good about yourself in what you do, and that may in turn even lead to being better at what you strive to do.

no i was talking in terms of who people would rather talk to. I'm always a backup. always a "if [insert name of number one, two, or three choice friend here] isn't available, I GUESS i'll talk to miranda (that would be me btw)". thanks anyway thouhg. +4

O ok. Guess I misunderstood. Now that its clarified, from my experience I really don't know what makes some people more approachable/approached more. But I'm usually not even close to first on peoples list of who they want to talk to. So your not alone on that.
