  • At the molecular level - the egg's protective membrane contains receptors called bindin, which are responsible for the specific identification of the sperm. If the egg does not recognize the sperm as one of its own kind, the sperm cannot enter the egg at all to deposit its genetic information, and a zygote cannot be created. It is biologically impossible for animals of different species to procreate.
  • Funny, I just read on Reuters about this happening. I didn't think it was possible and still don't. Guess we will just have to wait and see after testing is done. Here is the story with link to photo: Brazilian student Cassia Aparecida de Souza, 18, holds her cat Mimi together with what Cassia claims are Mimi's own offsprings born with dog traits last Friday, three months after mating with a neighbour's dog, in the southern Brazilian city of Passo Fundo, Rio Grande do Sul state, November 15, 2006. A geneticist from the Passo Fundo University plans to take blood samples from the animals to verify the claim by Cassia and her husband Rogerio that the puppies are part of Mimi's litter of six, of which the three that were born with cat features died soon after birth, leaving the surviving three dog-like offsprings. • Here is the followup on the cat and dog story from Brazil: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061122/od_nm/brazil_dogcats_dc In short, blood test refutes the woman's claim.
  • my cat keeps "offering" herself to my dog, so they can mate. I just hope nothing can come of it.
  • I hope they can't breed. I just caught my Chihuahua trying to mate with our cat. Poor little guy, he loves her a lot. He is very protective of her and even brings her part of his treats when we give him one. Anyone else have this type of romance between their dog and cat?
