Is it breaking copyright laws or anything to get a band's logo (i.e. Green Day's heart grenade, or HIM's heartagram) tattooed on your body?

technically yes. will they sue you? who knows. Disney tried to make it illegal for people to get disney tattoos, but I believe they failed, although it doesnt stop them from harrassing people.. you may ask green day for permission..

no, because you are not making money by doing this. And as lond as you don't go showing the tat off around the lawyers for either Green Day or HIM you shouldn't have a problem...

There's nothing special about tattoos that prevents them from being covered by copyright law. Technically, getting a tattoo of a copyrighted image constitutes making an unauthorized reproduction of the image (or maybe it will be treated as a derivative work, in either case, it's infringing). Tattoo artists sometimes sue other artists for copying their designs, and have won. It stands to reason that it could go the other way around - with the owner of a copyright suing a tattoo artist for infringing upon his or her copyright.
