My 1 year old cat wont use the litter box! We got him from a family that let their cats go anywhere (and he was taken away way too early). We thought he wouldnt use it because of our other cats, but now that hes alone he still wont! What do I do!?

After he eats in the morning, put him in and move his paws around. Then close the door and leave him there.
Do this regularly until he gets the idea.

Cats are not stupid. Even at a year old, if you place him in the litter box, and take his paws, make them scratch and paw the gravel, they usually take the hint.

I prefer putting the cat in and out several times a day. [and when I leave the house]. Litter boxes cost and smell...

But I live in a place where it's safe to do so...

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but usually if cats don't learn something before six months of age, they won't do.

Severe training and severe punishment might work, but it might also make the cats temperment change.

Assuming that you're trying to litter train your cat..

Find a quiet and convenient place to put a litter box. Introduce your cat to the litter box. Gently pick up your cat and place him in the litter box on an hourly basis. You have to be consistent or the cat will not grasp the concept. If he uses the bathroom in the litter box, praise him. Don't punish him if he has an accident, this will teach him to hide his accidents from you. If he does have an accident - clean up the mess thoroughly to eliminate smells. He may decide to use the bathroom in the same place again if it smells like a bathroom. Keep the litter box clean.. most cats won't return to a dirty litter box.
