Why don't animals recognise themselves in the mirror?

I think my cat does, now that he is older...When he was a kitten it was amusing to watch him by a mirror. Now, he will look into the mirror, but he doesn't hiss at it or attack it anymore.

Because they don't "think", like humans. They "react" through instinct.

Some animals do. Some don't. Their brains haven't evolved to need to self-recognize. They feel, they breathe, they eat, what they look like is not a matter to them. Other animals do. Some birds, apes, and other mammals do.

I believe American Idle is right to a certain degree, but like Shelby, I think they have the ability to "learn". My cats are like Shelby's... they used to freak out in front of a mirror. Now they sit in front of it and watch.... me.
