No. Leonard Cohen doesn't want a trophy to stuff up the hole in culture. He wants absolute control over every living soul! He wants crack and anal sex! Christ or Hiroshima! The Berlin wall! Stalin and St Paul! Now lie beside me, baby, that's an order... And the ranting subsides.

He has written and sang some truly horrible songs - but the rest I find quiet wonderful. I think anyone who lasts fifty years in that business and still selss records deserves a slightly better accolade than the one you suggest - but again Leonard might appreciate your's more : )

- He does some depressing songs, but he doesn't really perform them in a depressing way.
  I've never been quite sure if that's a stylistic choice on his part, or just a matter of his voice lacking the necessary emotive force, but I'm leaning towards the "Stylistic Choice" option.

- I saw him in concert last week. INCREDIBLE!!! My 21 year old son who has seen Bob Dylan, Neil Young (twice), and the Eagles in the last six months said he blew them all away...at 74 years old!

- Cohen's voice is as strong as ever actually. He did literally need the money for his retirement, though. His business manager ripped him off and left him basically broke.

- It is interesting listening to his early albums and his newer ones and his voice has become richer over the years. In a way I a glad that he went through his problems because it has caused him to write some of his best stuff.

- At 74, I'm pretty sure his best days are behind him. :-{) But I hope I'm wrong. His money problems are only in the last 5 years (more or less), So I don't think it had all that much influence on his work.

Really, he has a pretty even balance of moods in his music, he's made some songs that are incredibly depressing, but on the other hand, he's done some work that's very positive and often even pushes the envelope into "Inspirational".
I think a lot of people just focus on his more depressing work because he has a voice that, for many people, automatically suggests sorrow and misery.

For an example of how wide and varied the emotions of Leonard Cohen's work are, just listen to the stark contrast between these two songs of his.

Cohen is not afraid to approach subjects that are taboo as far as the love,love, love me do brigade do. A truly great who only recently seems to be gaining the accolade that he has deserved for decades!

- I think a lot of people characterise him as just another boring "Adult Contemporary" artist, without even bothering to put out the initial effort to fully appreciate his music.
  Probably because, like you said, his music doesn't offer the same easy punch that a lot of more mainstream music in most genres tends to these days.
