Soundgarden. It was really metal grunge though, but that was the charm for me. Smashing pumpkins was cool too.

I have to say Nirvana. Alice In Chains and Soundgarden were considered Metal when I first heard of them in the late 1980's. I remember seeing them on MTV's Metal Shop.
