Was a funeral veil invented so others wouldn't see the widow cry?

Just speculation - a veil shields the widow from having to show her face, and therefore her emotions, to the world. She's expected to be at the funeral, of course, but the veil affords her a measure of privacy with respect to those very personal emotions of sorrow and grief while she's in public.
